Bathroom Renovations

The Room You Use Twice a Day

Bathrooms are the densest rooms in the house. A main bath is often under 40 square feet and still needs plumbing, ventilation, waterproofing, electrical, tile setting and finish carpentry to all land within a few millimetres of each other.

That density is why bathroom renovations fail more often than any other room, and almost always in the same place: behind the tile. We build the waterproofing assembly first and treat the finishes as what goes on top of it.

We work across the range, from a powder room refresh to a full ensuite with a freestanding tub, curbless shower and heated floor, in homes throughout Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph.

WATERPROOFING

What Goes On Before the Tile

A shower is a waterproofing assembly with tile glued to it. Sloped mortar bed, bonded membrane, sealed corners and penetrations, correctly lapped seams. Get that layer right and the tile is decorative. Get it wrong and the tile is the only thing holding your subfloor together.

We build shower assemblies to the membrane manufacturer's published detail: sealed corners, sealed pipe penetrations, and correctly lapped seams. Getting that layer right is what removes the failure mode behind most bathroom callbacks.

"The waterproofing goes in before the tile, and it is the part we will not rush."

SMALL ROOM, MANY DECISIONS

Where the Inches Are Won

Bathroom layouts are decided in inches. Door swing against vanity drawer, toilet clearance to the tub, where the niche lands relative to the tile course, whether the shower glass clears the light switch. Sorting those on paper is cheaper than sorting them on site.

We do the same with materials. Porcelain against natural stone, frameless against semi-frameless glass, undermount against vessel sinks: each choice has a maintenance cost as well as a purchase cost, and we tell you both before you commit.

"Some tile photographs beautifully and stains within a year. We will tell you which is which."

Our Process

How Your Bathroom Renovations Project Works

1

Design Consultation

We measure the room, check the existing drain and vent locations, and test layouts against them.

2

Material Selection

Tile, fixtures, vanities and hardware chosen from a prepared shortlist at our showroom partners.

3

Waterproofing & Prep

Membrane, sloped bed and sealed penetrations go in and are checked before any finish work starts.

4

Plumbing & Electrical

Rough-in is completed and inspected while the walls are still open.

5

Tilework & Installation

Tile, vanity, shower system and trim are set to the layout agreed at design stage.

6

Final Polish

Grout, caulk, hardware and glass go in, followed by a full clean and joint-by-joint review.

The North Point Difference

Why Choose North Point for Bathroom Renovations

Tested Waterproofing

We install bonded membrane systems from Schluter and Laticrete, built to the manufacturer's published detail rather than to whatever is quickest.

Tile Set by Tile Setters

Layouts are drawn before the first cut, so grout lines run true, cuts land where you would want them, and niches sit on a full course.

Ventilation Sized to the Room

Exhaust fans are sized by room volume and ducted outside, which is what actually keeps mould out of a bathroom.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Most bathrooms run 3 to 6 weeks. A main bath that keeps its existing layout sits at the shorter end. A large ensuite with relocated plumbing, custom tile and made-to-measure glass sits at the longer end, since the glass cannot be ordered until the tiled opening exists to measure from.

Bathroom renovations generally range from $15,000 to $50,000 or more. Powder rooms sit well below that range. Full ensuites with relocated drains, heated floors and frameless glass sit at the top of it.

You need one if you are moving drains or supply lines, or adding electrical circuits. Replacing fixtures in their existing locations generally does not require a permit. We apply and book the inspections when one is needed.

Choose for how you use the room, but keep at least one bathtub somewhere in the house. Families with young children and buyers looking at your home later both expect one, and an ensuite is usually the right room to give the walk-in shower to.

Three things do almost all the work: a bonded waterproofing membrane installed to the manufacturer's detail, an exhaust fan sized to the room volume and ducted outside rather than into the attic, and materials chosen for wet service. We do all three on every bathroom.
